On August 12, 1955, his body embalmed landed a plane in Rio de Janeiro. Sixty thousand people attended his funeral held in the lobby of the City Council of the then federal capital. The funeral procession to the cemetery St. John the Baptist was accompanied by about half a million people singing sporadically, softly, "Tahi", one of his biggest hits.
